Opera House Arts and the Bud Carter Memorial Scholarship Committee are pleased to announce the winners of this year’s Bud Carter Memorial Music Scholarships, all of whom will perform Saturday, June 8 at 7 p.m. in the annual Bud Carter Memorial Concert at the Stonington Opera House. The celebratory event not only showcases the talent of the young winners but also is the sole source of funding for these scholarships, which are used to support lessons, music camp tuitions, and musical instrument purchases for island school students. The Bud Carter Memorial Scholarship Committee members also provide advice and oversight regarding instructors and instruments. Tickets to the event are by free will offering, with a suggested donation of $10 per person.
“Bud Carter loved to sing, and this scholarship and memorial concert, which assist and showcase young island talent, are great tributes to Bud,” said Frank Gotwals, a Stonington singer-songwriter and chair of the Bud Carter Memorial Scholarship committee, who will co-host the evening. “One of our recent winners recently said the money had changed her life. Not many scholarships have such direct and immediate impact.”
This year’s winners and performers are: Ian Cust, theater; Amy Hardy, piano; Hazel Woodward, guitar and voice; Rylee Eaton, violin; SooZin Kim Cha, flute; Cameron Stewart, French horn; Cole Stewart, trumpet; and Ross Stewart, clarinet.
The following student winners from other years will also perform on June 8, demonstrating their progress and growth: Marvin Merritt, Justine Rhys, Brendan Penfold, Benjamin Penfold, Andy Turner, Nathaniel Curtis, Isle of Jazz with guest Diana Rhys, plus special surprise guest artists.
