Maine Farmers Market Convention Jan 27 & 28th

This just in–Courtenay Haight has attended in the past and says this convention is worth attending. Lots of good information and interaction with other markets state-wide. Here’s the information if anyone wants to go and check out their website, too.

MAINE FARMERS’ MARKET CONVENTION, Friday/Saturday January 27 and 28
In its fourth year and brought to you by the Down East Business Alliance, the MFMC provides professional development opportunities aimed at increasing our marketing skills, expanding our knowledge and improving our bottom line. This year’s topics include social networking, EBT, Winter Markets, innovative practices, QuickBooks, insurance, Slow Money, conflict management, food safety and product promotion. Workshops are led by local and national experts in their fields and many both formal and informal opportunities to network with your peers are provided. Whether you are veteran marketeer who “remembers the days when…” or are fresh out of your apprenticeship, there will be an abundance of useful information for you at the Convention.
This year’s convention will be at the Harraseeket Inn in Freeport. As of this morning, there are only two rooms remaining available at the Inn so if you want a no-commute weekend and a night or two of luxury, jump on it! Down East Business Alliance has arranged a very favorable rate for these first-class accommodations. There are also plenty of other places to stay in Freeport priced from about $60 a night and up that any of the online travel sites will connect you to.
For more information and to register, go to: http://www.whcacap.org/farm-to-market/farmers-market-convention/index.php You may register for either one or both days.

The Pilgrim’s Inn Gives Us a Plug

The Stonington Farmers Market received a glowing review from the innkeeper’s blog at the Pilgrim’s Inn last week. Check out the article here. The Pilgrim’s Inn serves delicious local cuisine at their Whale’s Rib Restaurant. We thank them for referring their guests to our market and for recognizing us with their blog!

Island Pantry

We are always happy that the Stonington Farmers Market has become a venue for worthy causes to advertise their organizations. One such worthy cause is Island Pantry. The Island Pantry is a volunteer run, non profit org dedicated to helping those in fear of hunger. The group  makes life less difficult for those who have to sacrifice necessities like heat, warm clothing, and medicine in order to eat. Each month Island Pantry provides food to over 125 families. Area residents in need come once a month to choose a balanced assortment of foods from the Island Pantry which is open Thursdays from 5:30-7:30 PM in the Island Community Center. Over 60,000 pounds of food is given out during the year, all of it purchased by your donations to Island Pantry. Seek out the Island Pantry booth at the Stonington Farmers Market or contact them via PO Box 12, Deer Isle, ME 04627 to send a donation or find out more.

Jorge’s Garlic Harvest

Jorge Casteneda with his garlic bouquet.

Looking for a marvelous centerpiece for your summer dinner party? Garlic scapes have an oddly elegant twisty shape that makes for a very contemporary and unique bouquet to grace your table as well as your palate. At the Stonington Farmers Market on Friday morning from 10AM to Noon, you’ll find Jorge Casteneda and his garlic harvest. Jorge is a master craftsman and shows his gorgeous (we say “jorgeous”!) wood turnings at the market, too. Discover JC Turning’s goblets, bowls, and objets d’art finely crafted of local timber along with the garlic.

Crafty Vendors

Why is the Stonington Farmers Market such a popular market (some say it is THE most popular outdoor farmers market in Maine)? We think it’s the unique blend of food, fun, fine art, and flair that our special mix of vendors bring to the market with them. For instance, you can find wonderfully creative and kooky handknit head gear (aka hats) from Salty Spinners.

If you’re more into DIY (do-it-yourself) knitting, Deer Isle Wool has a very nice selection of handspun wool fibers that will keep your needles busy.

Deer Isle Wool has yarns, dear.

Nobody has a wider array of wooden spoons than Blue Hill Spoonworks. A fixture at many of the area’s farmers markets, Spoon Bob always has a ready smile and can help you pick out the perfect spoon for your kitchen concoctions. Hint: spoons like these make wonderful hostess gifts, too.

We’ve got a metal worker here, too. Herman Kidder Blacksmith Artist shows his artistry with metal (and can bend your ear with a good story or two!). You’ll find silver earrings along with other metal items, all of them “genuinely forged” right here on Deer Isle.

These are just a handful of the crafty vendors you’ll discover every Friday morning from 10AM to Noon at the Stonington Farmers Market. Come visit us!

Ola El El Frijoles

El El Frijoles Mexican Food

Nothing makes a weekend start sooner than some great salsa, guacamole, and tortilla chips with your marguerita! At the Stonington Farmers Market you’ll find all this and more at  El El Frijole‘s market tent. Well, okay…you won’t find the marguerita at the market but you’ll find all the fixings to go with. And be sure to try the full authentic menu at El El Frijole California-style taqueria at 41 Caterpillar Hill Road in Sargentville just a ways up the road from the bridge.

Sunset Acres Goat Cheese & Fine Meats

Gorgeous gourmet goat cheeses from Sunset Acres

Usually the longest line at the Stonington Farmers Market is at the Sunset Acres Farm & Dairy tent where market President Bob Bowen holds court. Maybe–just maybe–the long lines of people are because they are are waiting for a bon mot from Bob. But most likely the island foodies are lining up for the freshly butchered Sunset Acres meats (beef ribs/steaks/ground beef, pork, chicken, sausage, etc) or the savory gourmet goat cheeses. Check it out yourself each Friday from 10AM-Noon.

New Ellsworth Market Seeks Vendors

ELLSWORTH: Based on the success of its December holiday market, Woodlawn Museum, in conjunction with the Downeast Business Alliance, is pleased to announce that it will launch a year round Farmers’ Market this spring.

The project was conceived of when local farmers approached the Downeast Business Alliance and Woodlawn about the possibility of a market.  That prompted a test “holiday” market in December that was held in Woodlawn’s renovated Sleigh Barn.  The interest from vendors and the strong market attendance indicated that Woodlawn could support a year round market.

A farmers’ market is a natural fit at Woodlawn.  The historic 180-acres estate was once a working farm and its fields contain some of the best soil in Hancock County.  Now enjoyed as both a historic house and public park, approximately 10,000 people visit or participate in Woodlawn’s programs each year.  While it is hoped that the market will draw more people to the estate, it should benefit from the strong public presence already at Woodlawn.  The planned start date for the Woodlawn Farmers’ Market is on Mothers’ Day, May 9th from 11 am to 3 pm, and then will continue each Sunday thereafter.

According to Joshua Torrance, Woodlawn’s executive director, “A farmers’ market is within keeping of estate’s heritage and its community resource focused.  It also gives us a meaningful way to support local agriculture.”

Several vendors have expressed interest in the market and more are being recruited.  “We want the farmers’ to take ownership of the market,” remarked Jeff Ackerman from the Downeast Business Alliance.  “It is important that we find vendors who are committed and that see the potential of a year round market at Woodlawn.”

To that end, there will be an organizational meeting on Friday, March 19th at 2 pm at Woodlawn.  Interested farmers’ are encouraged to attend.  Please RSVP to either Jeff Ackerman at 664-2424 or Joshua Torrance at 667-8671.  Refreshments will be served and farmers’ will have the opportunity to learn more about the market.
