“100 Years Ago” to be Deer Isle July 4th Parade Theme

OOOOPS! We misreported that the theme for this year’s 4th of July Parade would be the Opera House alone. Correction:

The theme for the Fourth of July this year is “100 Years Ago” in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Opera House, 100th anniversary of the Sunset Church, and in honor of local history. Suggestions for Grand Marshal are welcome.

Band suggestions are also welcome.

Is it a good idea to have more than one band on the pier? They play for a long time.

Any vendors interested in being on the pier should contact Kelly Kolysher, kolysher@yahoo.com or 460-4748.

Chamber Members Consider Biz Gatherings…

The Stonington Farmers Market is a member of the Deer Isle Chamber of Commerce. Here is a bulletin from the Chamber newsletter:

Business Gatherings

Many Chamber of Commerce members have expressed a desire for periodic gatherings of Chamber members and other business members. A chance to compare notes, exchange ideas, information and leads, or hang out and just catch up.

Would anyone be interested in hosting such an event?

Let Kelly know, Kolysher@yahoo.com or 460-4647.

Geoffrey Warner Studio Gets New Wing

Stonington Farmers Market vendor Geoffrey Warner shared this news with us:
While some of us are enjoying rolling around the office on our new Rolling Owl stools, other crew members are busy on our new addition. Framed in before the holidays, we have now completed the interior walls and have begun working on the shelving units.  In addition to the new shop space, we’ll also be redesigning the gallery. We look forward to having everyone over for a grand opening this summer!

Congratulations, Geoff!

Maine Legislature to Honor Stonington Opera House

Opera House Arts is a vendor member of the Stonington Farmers Market. We congratulate them on this exciting news:

2012 is the 100th Anniversary of an Historic Community Building

STONINGTON, MAINE—On its session on Thursday, March 15, the Maine State Legislature will pass a Legislative Sentiment honoring the Stonington Opera House on its 100th anniversary. State Representative Walter Kumiega will speak on the House floor and the Speaker will recognize guests from Opera House Arts, the nonprofit organization that restored the Opera House in 1999 and re-opened it in 2000 after the building had suffered more than eight years of abandonment and decay.
The iconic, green-shingled Stonington Opera House building, rising four stories above Stonington Harbor, is on the National Register of Historic Places. At the heart of Stonington’s downtown, where School St., Main St., and the commercial fish pier intersect, the Opera House has been central to Stonington’s Main Street and the island’s cultural life for more than 100 years. The first amusement hall was built on the current footprint in 1886 by quarry owner and entrepreneur Charles B. Russ. From 1886 to 1910, first the original Russ’s Music Hall and then its expansion, the magnificent Stonington Opera House seating 1,000 people, were important Stonington landmarks and institutions. One hundred years ago this year, the brand new Stonington Opera House as it exists today, with its unique architectural element, the scene tower, re-opened to the public: rising from the ashes of a 1910 fire that might have taken the town with it had not the town’s new water system and fire hydrants gone live that very day.
Opera House Arts is planning multiple events and projects to celebrate this centennial, including the re-creation of an historic vaudeville show of the type that came to the Opera House 100 years ago, July 5-8; the re-staging of Opera House Arts’ popular original musical, “Burt Dow, Deep Water Man,” August 9-19; giant video projections of historic photos on the exterior of the Opera House tower; and the release of a new history and photo book on the Stonington Opera House since its original construction in 1886.
As an important part of these celebrations, Opera House Arts seeks stories and items from community members who remember the Opera House during earlier incarnations. Individuals who collected the china that was given away at movies during the 1930s have already come forth, and a display of these items is scheduled for this summer. Photos, programs, dance cards, posters and other ephemera are all welcome regardless of their condition. Please contact Linda Nelson at 367-2788 or lnelson@operahousearts.org.
Opera House Arts (OHA) is a nonprofit small professional theater noted for its original productions and artistic commissions of performance work relevant to its Down East Maine community. OHA restored and operates the 1912 Stonington Opera House with a full, 52-week-a-year schedule of first-run movies, live theater, concerts, dance, workshops, community events and educational programs. For more information and a full schedule of events, please go to www.operahousearts.org.

May 25th After Market Vendor Meeting Date Set—Agenda Points Sought by April 7th

UPDATE: First Meeting Changed to June 15th not May 25th

Greetings Vendors,

The first vendor meeting of the Stonington Farmers Market will be held immediately after the market of Memorial Day Weekend on May 25th. We are collecting issues that people want to discuss so that we can publish an agenda for this meeting prior to the meeting.

We will be able to put several issues to vote at the meeting and in addition this year we may provide an online voting ballot of some kind so that people unable to attend the meeting will still have their say. More on this after the
agenda is drawn up.

Please note that your webmaster and volunteer PR person (Katy Allgeyer )is not the proper channel for venting frustrations or sending questions to regarding market policy or other announcements. If you would like to post comments or feedback on the website or on the facebook page, you are able to do so by using the comments link buttons on both forums.

PLEASE SEND YOUR AGENDA POINTS BY APRIL 7th TO COURTENAY :
our secretary Courtenay Haight <haightfarm@midmaine.com> by April 7th so that an agenda may be typed up and then put on the website by our webmaster for all to review   (YES THE DATE FOR GETTING YOUR ISSUES ON THE AGENDA HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO APRIL 7TH!)
Thank you.

Clarification and Seasonal Fee Collection for 2012

TO CLARIFY FEE COLLECTION FOR UPCOMING SEASON:
Ten week period will be from mid June thru August.  As to rent, we didn’t have any excess (funds) in 2011 as in the past.  Only $1,000 (extra and over expenses) I think. Our rent has gone up !  And the pay in advance wasn’t voted on, it just makes so much sense. If anyone wants to come forward ( a volunteer position open to any vendor members) to collect every week during the whole 22 week market than it can still be done that way. It just seems stupid to take an hour every week to do it and the record keeping involved.  At $5 a week we have the cheapest rate around for the amount of customers we get.   In Bangor, I pay $20 a week!  Bar Harbor is $10 plus the annual amount of $75.  And none are anywhere as good as Stonington.  To hold a spot for someone that is only there a few months as to renting to a full season person is maybe something we need to discuss since rent is such an issue!

PS: Non profits will be the same as last years. $50 I think you paid.  They are all the same, we are just trying to find a way to get dues in early to get them over with.
