Food Festival regroup
The Director of Economic Development for Stonington has informed the Chamber that they will not be proceeding with the Food Festival.
Would anyone want to take over this event? The Chamber would fully support the who ever wanted to pursue it. An outline for the event already exists.

Student members of Opera House Arts’ Community Advisory Board have created and launched the first annual Imagination Project Student Film Festival at the Stonington Opera House. The festival will screen at the Stonington Opera House on Sunday, June 3 at 2 p.m. Admission will be free. All entries are due May 25th at 5 p.m. Guidelines and submission forms are available at www.operahousearts.org.
OHA Community Advisory Board members Mena Mattes and Marvin Merritt, both eighth graders, and Sasha Zembrusky, a sophomore at Deer Isle-Stonington High School, came up with the idea and have spearheaded the planning for the festival, which will showcase short films of all genres by young, emerging filmmakers in grades 6-12. The festival is an extension of OHA’s Imagination Project Public Access Digital Media Studio, from which community members of any age can check out digital video cameras and professional-level lighting and sound equipment, as well as gain access to and learn to use digital editing software.
All works submitted for the festival must be shot, edited, written and directed by one or more students. Submissions also must be 10 minutes or under in length, including titles and credits. Works in progress are eligible for consideration. All entries must be accompanied by a submission form, available at www.operahousearts.org. Multiple entries are accepted but each entry must be accompanied by separate form. Entries must be received in labeled DVD format, and be accompanied by a written copy of the film credits; a short artist statement (why did you make the film?); and a short director’s biography (who are you?). All submitted films will be pre-screened for appropriate content and production quality. All submissions will be mailed or delivered to Opera House Arts as outlined in the guidelines.
Entrants will be notified of acceptance by May 29.

OOOOPS! We misreported that the theme for this year’s 4th of July Parade would be the Opera House alone. Correction:
The theme for the Fourth of July this year is “100 Years Ago” in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Opera House, 100th anniversary of the Sunset Church, and in honor of local history. Suggestions for Grand Marshal are welcome.
Band suggestions are also welcome.
Is it a good idea to have more than one band on the pier? They play for a long time.

While some of us are enjoying rolling around the office on our new Rolling Owl stools, other crew members are busy on our new addition. Framed in before the holidays, we have now completed the interior walls and have begun working on the shelving units. In addition to the new shop space, we’ll also be redesigning the gallery. We look forward to having everyone over for a grand opening this summer!

2012 is the 100th Anniversary of an Historic Community Building
STONINGTON, MAINE—On its session on Thursday, March 15, the Maine State Legislature will pass a Legislative Sentiment honoring the Stonington Opera House on its 100th anniversary. State Representative Walter Kumiega will speak on the House floor and the Speaker will recognize guests from Opera House Arts, the nonprofit organization that restored the Opera House in 1999 and re-opened it in 2000 after the building had suffered more than eight years of abandonment and decay.
The iconic, green-shingled Stonington Opera House building, rising four stories above Stonington Harbor, is on the National Register of Historic Places. At the heart of Stonington’s downtown, where School St., Main St., and the commercial fish pier intersect, the Opera House has been central to Stonington’s Main Street and the island’s cultural life for more than 100 years. The first amusement hall was built on the current footprint in 1886 by quarry owner and entrepreneur Charles B. Russ. From 1886 to 1910, first the original Russ’s Music Hall and then its expansion, the magnificent Stonington Opera House seating 1,000 people, were important Stonington landmarks and institutions. One hundred years ago this year, the brand new Stonington Opera House as it exists today, with its unique architectural element, the scene tower, re-opened to the public: rising from the ashes of a 1910 fire that might have taken the town with it had not the town’s new water system and fire hydrants gone live that very day.
Opera House Arts is planning multiple events and projects to celebrate this centennial, including the re-creation of an historic vaudeville show of the type that came to the Opera House 100 years ago, July 5-8; the re-staging of Opera House Arts’ popular original musical, “Burt Dow, Deep Water Man,” August 9-19; giant video projections of historic photos on the exterior of the Opera House tower; and the release of a new history and photo book on the Stonington Opera House since its original construction in 1886.
As an important part of these celebrations, Opera House Arts seeks stories and items from community members who remember the Opera House during earlier incarnations. Individuals who collected the china that was given away at movies during the 1930s have already come forth, and a display of these items is scheduled for this summer. UPDATE: First Meeting Changed to June 15th not May 25th

The first vendor meeting of the Stonington Farmers Market will be held immediately after the market of Memorial Day Weekend on May 25th. We are collecting issues that people want to discuss so that we can publish an agenda for this meeting prior to the meeting.
We will be able to put several issues to vote at the meeting and in addition this year we may provide an online voting ballot of some kind so that people unable to attend the meeting will still have their say. More on this after the
agenda is drawn up.
